In 2006, Jason and Hannah Rhodes, were excited to learn that they were expecting their second child. After having a completely healthy son, Andrew, they were not prepared for the devastating news at their ultrasound that their unborn baby had a 'rare and severe' heart defect, called Ebstein's Anomaly.

Jill and Michael Teats became proud parents of their first-born child, Emerson, on January 18, 2002. They received Emerson’s diagnosis of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome at Jill’s 20-week prenatal ultrasound.

Lisa Ziff
Organ Donation Liaison
In January 2004, Lisa and Adam’s daughter Shay was born. Unknown to them she had a severe and rare congenital heart defect called Restrictive Cardiomyopathy. The Ziff’s were devastated when they heard that the only option for Shay was a heart transplant. Thankfully, Shay received her life saving transplant on May 18, 2004.

Karen and Wayne were excited to be having their first child, and on November 16, 2000 their beautiful baby boy, Christian John Sam Corey was born. He was perfect; a gift from God.

Trisha Leonard is married to Jason and they have three children - Connor, Calvin, and Reese. The Leonards found out that Connor had HLHS when Trisha was 20 weeks pregnant, and they were devastated.

Julie and her husband Dan are the proud parents of two boys. Their first son Nicholas, twelve years old was born a healthy baby, pink and perfect at birth and in twelve years only sick with common colds and flus. A healthy baby is something they took for granted and never knew any different until five years later when their son Brandon was born.

Jennifer and David became proud parents of their son, Hunter in March 2006 and then again with their daughter Lily Marie in July 2007 and are now awaiting the arrival of their third child, a girl, in January 2009.

Sheila and Matt Ruma are the parents of three sons. In April of 2003, at their 20 week ultrasound, they were told that their second son would be born with a heart defect called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).

Anna & Jeremy Sherman were extremely excited when they found out they were soon expecting their second child and that it was a Girl. In August of 2006, their world was turned upside down. They were in fact told that the little girl Anna was so joyfully carrying would be born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

Dr. Carlen A. Gomez-Fifer
Pediatric Cardiology, Associate Professor, C.S. Mott Children's Hospital
Although not from Michigan originally, Dr. Carlen Gomez-Fifer has spent a lot of time in Ann Arbor. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, and her medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Gomez-Fifer then returned to Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Dr. Henry L. Walters, III, M.D.
Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery, Children's Hospital of Michigan
Dr. Walters decided to become a physician when he was 18 years of age. After observing a cardiac surgeon operate, Dr. Walters decided that the field of cardiac surgery would be his life-long pursuit as well.
Dr. Nancy G. Cutler
Pediatric Cardiology, William Beaumont Hospital
Dr. Nancy Cutler loves being a pediatric cardiologist. In fact, since 8 years of age, she has known specifically that she wanted to be a cardiologist. In medical school, she learned more about the specialty and then decided that she really had a desire to work in pediatrics.
